Business Lender

We are looking for a Business Lender to join our team. The position requires the skills and judgement to evaluate the capacity of small businesses and nonprofit organizations to use and repay debt effectively in line with our mission and strategic priorities. The Business Lender will identify prospective borrowers and shepherd them through the loan application process, underwrite and present loan proposals for review and approval, and manage borrower relationships. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, thrive in a dynamic environment, and will embrace lending as an opportunity to engage with small business owners and nonprofit leaders with respect and curiosity.

Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Design and Creative Production

  • Develop lending opportunities to small businesses and non-profit organizations In New Hampshire, Vermont, and neighboring states.
  • Respond to loan Inquiries and Identify eligible applicants.
  • In close coordination with the Community Loan Fund's business and community technical assistance team, build referral networks and knowledge about resources available to prospective borrowers.
  • Work with prospective borrowers to collect the necessary Information to evaluate an applicant's capacity to manage and repay debt to grow or stabilize operations.
  • With guidance from the VP of Business Lending, determine which loan prospects should advance to full underwriting and structure loan terms and conditions that meet the applicant’s needs and adhere to lending policies and guidelines.
  • Prepare written credit memos with accompanying financial analysis that clearly articulate the strengths, risks and mitigants of loan proposals and recommend appropriately structured loans for review and approval by the applicable approval authority.
  • In coordination with the credit administration team, facilitate and oversee timely and compliant loan closings of approved loans.
  • Actively manage borrower relationships through regular communication and routine review of financial Information as appropriate given the status of the borrower's experience and payment record.
  • In coordination with the credit administration team, help to manage non-performing loans from a relationship-based framework that emphasizes communication and accountability from borrowers.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines, including fair lending and ethical behavior.

     

Education and Experience

  • At least five years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Relevant experiencee may include business or nonprofit lending, small business ownership or management, commercial financing coaching or advisory services. We will consider alternative relevant processional backgrounds so long as the candidate demonstrates proficiency in understanding commerical credit risk analysis.
  • Experience demontrating an understanding of what it takes to manage a small business or nonprofit organization.
  • Professional experience or course work In commercial financial analysis demonstrating proficiency in reading and analyzing financial statements.
  • Professional experience or coursework demonstrating proficiency with standard terms, tools, and methodologies for evaluating credit risk.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate well in writing and orally.
  • Experience with the SBA Microloan Program a plus but not necessary.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote.

  • Absolute commitment to protecting confidentiality.
  • Availability to work and travel for occasional evening and weekend meetings.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hand to finger, handle, and reach with hands and arms above shoulder height, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Specific vision abilities required in this job include the ability to adjust focus between near and far.

  • Ability to carry camera / photo gear (up to ~25 pounds)
  • Ability to answer telephones and use standard office equipment (copier, fax, etc.).
  • Ability to read, write, and understand and speak English clearly.
  • Ability to use a computer for Community Loan Fund business.

     

Employment Details

  • Location: Concord, NH and hybrid (in office Tuesday and Wednesday; training will be in person)
  • Salary range: $85,000 to $95,000
